Phew…what a day! A real Winter wonderland snowscape… in the heart of Derbyshire on the snowiest day of the year.
The day started with Victoria telling me I should really stop faffing, and look at the TV news. Heavy snow all over the Peak District, with many roads closed. We rushed out as soon as we could, and swapped the gear into my 4×4 Toyota Hilux, just in case.
The journey was fun, and as we got closer to Bakewell, the snow started to build. So glad we swapped cars. For the latter part of the journey over the hills, there was only us and the snow plough on the road. Victoria took the opportunity to document this with pictures on her iPhone.
The beautiful Bagshaw Hall at the top of a hill overlooking the centre of Bakewell was the start of our day with Joe & Darren. The snow really added a sprinkle of magic dust to the photos of Joe and Darren. The combination of snowy hills and rooftops, and the huge laurel bushes covered in snow was sublime. I’m sure this is what Vaughn Monroe had in mind when he sang this iconic song. Such beauty is not without its dangers, as I found out when I got covered in the stuff as I walked under the eaves of the Hall, which took out one of my flashguns 🙁
The route down to the Registry Office was a bit on the slippery side with a helpful neighbour clearing a path with his snow shovel. We met up with the rest of the wedding party at The Wheatsheaf Inn as the cars had struggled with the steep, windy & very icy roads.
This wedding party never stopped laughing all day. It’s a good job we didn’t need any serious shots, everyone seemed to have flip-top heads!
Bakewell registry office was a beautiful old room, filled with lovely old oak furniture and an ancient map of the locality on the wall. Confetti followed, and then a walk to the Pointing Dog and Duck for the Wedding Breakfast.
The wedding party braved the slippery snowy conditions to have their group shots taken on the banks of the River Wye.
At the end of the day, no visit to Bakewell can be complete without a visit to the Bakewell Pudding shop, which we had for our tea! Delicious.
